3D Renders…

What are 3D renders and why am I even writing about it?

I have clients that are in the construction and building industry. Photo realistic 3D renders for this industry are a standard process for a product that is in the planning phase, hasnt been constructed, or is sitting in a newly built area with temp fencing, no grass or landscaping where its just not looking presentable, or ‘Instaworthy’ and they want to pitch that product to potential buyers.

A draughtsperson, civil engineer or architect will use software to create an image or 3D interactive design of their proposed project or design. This applies to NPD (New Product Development) I mean, you need a visual to use if you want to pitch that product, right? This is where the render image can come in handy. Pitching your brand new kitchen cabinet sitting in the workshop isnt too attractive to a potential buyer. Awks.

You can draft up a proposal of such product and throw in the render of it, in situ. A 3D visual is more effective than a drawing plan. Renders these days are very realistic, so much so that if you didnt have an eye for it, you would think it was a photo. Photo realistic. If you have a new estate being built, a shopping complex or an apartment building, they will have a 3D render up on their website to show everyone what it should look like, this generates interest and can result in leased customers for the complex itself.

I liaise with Kate Lutsenko from Archicgi on a regular basis as we share clients. Ive learnt the difference between an amazing render, a not so great render and some that are down right BAD. Finding the right person or company to work your project render can be a challenge.

This is how Kate and I met via mutual connections. I had to outsource for my clients and my go to was LinkedIn. For those who dont know, LinkedIn is a professional networking site (owned by Microsoft) to help people make business connections, share their experiences, resumes, and find jobs. In short, LinkedIn is Facebook for professionals. I found Archicgi and Kate!

Archicgi is a professional 3D company that has been in business for ten years. ‘No photos, only 100% renders‘ Kate works for Archicgi. Archicgi has great pricing, a fantastic product and a big pool of talent at the ready for your chosen project annnd…unlimited revisions! Whats a revision? Client to 3D artist “Hi, umm can you please make the chair white?'“ Oh, hi again, can you please make the chair a table?” “Hi, Sorry, can you just make the table a bench and add another chair?” “I dont like it, can you just…” Revisions. Any artist will know the pain of some revision requests. If you know, you know.

Sometimes a company has a draughtsperson, engineer or architect where their workload cant fit in a render. Depending on the complexity of it, a render can take many hours, days even. Yep, there goes your pc for the entire day or more! Job wise, you could have a pc for rendering only. Time poor people just cant deal with it and have to outsource. You need a very powerful pc or laptop to do photo realistic renders. I use graphic software and have to do a little rendering here and there. If I am rendering, I will need to close off any web pages, or open programs so I can complete my render without my laptop freezing. My laptop is a Surface Pro 6 with 16 gb ram, so its not bad, but not great for heavy graphics software use and rendering, it manages to complete what I need it to do.

Here is a BAD render, I wold not be letting this out in public #wow 😳

Who uses 3d Rendering?

My own experience of 3D rendering is in construction for clients and graphic design for myself + clients. These days its application and capabilities are extraordinary. The creative space has benefited immensely with the available technology and its application gives us a visual of what you could only imagine years ago.

  • If you have a product idea, it can be made into reality via CGI (Computer Generated Image).

  • A city council is planning a new park. In steps the architect with the 3D render design to pitch it in the tender proposal.

  • A watch company has a new design, yep, the 3D render is there for pre release purchase.

  • Mobile apps use graphic rendering to function.

  • Gaming. One of the best known uses of 3D models is in the area of gaming.

  • Entertainment; Have you seen ‘Alita, Battle Angel’? That is video rendering. CGI.

  • Manufacturing; 3D printing is very cool and produces prototypes at a smaller affordable scale.

  • Advertising and Marketing; In the toy space that new “must-have” item for Christmas? Those July ads were probably 3D models of the actual toy.

  • Health Care; Prosthetics for amputated limbs, crowns for your teeth, arch supports, parts to repair damaged organs, 3D scanning, 3D modeling and printing come into play here.

So, there you have it. A little bit of knowledge of the creative space and how 3D rendering is used in things you may not have thought about, until reading this. Perhaps you could utilise the knowledge in your own project? Contact Kate from Archicgi for a rundown on how they can help you with your project needs. I have found them to be consistent in deliverables and nailing the brief.
